Hard candy molds

Hi everyone,

Candy molds are fun to make and fun to use.

My kids love their candies in all sizes and shapes. Usually for birthdays and holidays I take the time and enjoy making my kids all sort of lollipops. In this webpage, and in the video below (and in the YouTube channel) I discuss how to make such molds. These molds can cost you as low as zero (dollars/euro/pounds etc) to make or they can be a little more expensive, as you will see below.

My first molds were made using a laser printer toner. Every laser toner has an aluminum tube in it. Carefully extract the tube (it’s a messy job!!) or buy a smooth internal aluminum, copper or stainless (the best is stainless) from a local shop. Cut small sections of your tube using a hacksaw (not a tube cutter!) and presto – you have a candy mold. To finish your mold cut a full slit in it and drill a 3-4mm (1/16″ or slightly larger) hole near the bottom of the mold for a lollipop stick. That’s it. It takes just a few minutes to make one of those and they are super easy and at zero cost – my most favorite price.

If you can’t drill holes – not a problem. Cut a second slit that is half deep and fold the tongue you just made to form a small shelf your lollipop stick will sit on – and for you to pull on (see the top  mold in the picture). This was actually my first ever mold and they work just fine. If you want more convenient molds just add small screws as handles to allow you to open the mold and extract the candy more easily, as I did. Here is an image of laser toner molds:

The second type of candy molds I’ve made was far simpler but a little more expensive – I bought stainless cookie cutters and used those as molds. These cutters are fairly cheap and inexpensive. They are also available online and in local shops. As before, you will need to slit the molds – make sure to carefully select where you cut the molds. A small opening for the lollipop stick is added at the bottom of the mold and you are done. The best way to do that would be using the a Dremel tool with its metal cutting disc. To use these molds simply put your lollipop sticks on a flat parchment paper and place the molds over them. Done!

You could also drill a hole for the lollipop as before, but that may complicate things. Still, with small molds (as seen below) you may have to, as it is hard to pour the candy into these and the candy can be a bit thick. In this case, a stick in the middle of a thick candy makes more sense than at the bottom. To make the holes be sure to use a cobalt drill bit.

As always, here is a video explaining about the making and use of these molds.

I hope you enjoy it and give it a try. Please feel free to comment and ask questions either in the blog section of this website or in the YouTube page.

Have a sweet day,
